Thomas Jefferson University's Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Neurotheology program, under the direction of Andrew Newberg, MD, uses brain imaging (SPECT, fMRI) to investigate the neural mechanisms of prayer, meditation, and spiritual experiences. Its research program is embedded in a major medical institution and uses rigorous neuroimaging methodology to study the mind-brain basis of spiritual phenomena.
